Sacramento History Awards

SCHS 2013 Awards of Excellence

This past month, the Sacramento County Historical Society recognized the efforts of several hardworking and passionate individuals in the historical community. The History Press is delighted to count some of our authors among those honored at the SCHS 2013 Awards Dinner.

Historian and author Annette Kassis received a Publication Award for her History Press Landmarks book Weinstock’s: Sacramento’s Finest Department Store, which recounts the local store’s retail legacy and innovative management. The Weinstock-Lubin Collection at the Center for Sacramento History was one of the local resources Annette drew from in her research process.

Maryellen Burns, co-author of the History Press American Palate book Lost Sacramento Restaurants & Their Recipes, received a President’s Award for her local history initiatives including “You Are Where You Eat” and “If This House Could Talk.” Maryellen is currently working with the Sacramento Public Library, Capital Public Radio, CalHumanites, and the We Are Where We Eat team to gather, document, and share the stories of Sacramento’s incredible food heritage.

Congratulations to the other Sacramento County Historical Society awardees as well! Downtown Sacramento Partnership guides Mike Munson and Shawn Peter received an Education Award for their downtown history tours, and Blackbird Kitchen & Bar owner Carina Lampkin was honored with a Preservation Award for restoration of the 1931 People’s Acceptance Building, designed by local architects Charles and James Dean.
